@2WHAT CAN BE DONE WITHOUT LISTER?
================================
Sad news. Truly sad.
Sure, it may be sad that RD probably won't make a seventh series -
even if shooting had commenced on it, I don't think it'd be an advisable
move to air it. If need be, I hate to say it, Lister could remain dead
"for real" after "Out of Time," though I've always considered him the
lead character of the lot and my favorite actor among the RD regulars,
not to mention the only real sympathetic character in the bunch. And
the final, but perhaps best, option - RD can join Blake's 7 and Doctor
Who in the great hall of fame of British sci-fi series whose resolutions
remain an unfinished cliffhanger...
More seriously, though, if one takes this widespread news as gospel,
it's sad that Mr. Charles apparently felt - or somehow got himself into
a state where he did feel - that he had to do something like this. If
you're in zone 2 or 3, you've surely heard by now that one of America's
most popular sports heroes is similarly being brought before the court
for a more deadly - but no less reprehensible - crime. That this now
happens to another entertainment figure is sad, but not unthinkable.
Somehow what's already going on softened the blow of this news, despite
the fact that I have spent much more time admiring Charles's work than
O.J. Simpson's.
I would go citing "innocent until proven guilty," but that's a
needlessly American assumption in this case, and often is a cop-out as
@2well. Still, it's something to keep in the back of your mind, though I
will not be adding "Free Craig" to my tagline rotation anytime soon. If
he's found guilty, I daresay that I hope the system of justice in
Britain will mete out the full punishment earned for such an act,
regardless of the individual in question's public status. That's
something that the court system in the States routinely falls down on,
so you'll have to forgive me if I seem to lack any sympathy.
Another thing I've thought of since reading this news is the mindset
that seems to propel the career comedian. No matter how much they make
the rest of us laugh, there seems to be some pain that drives such
individuals as John Belushi, Robin Williams (thankfully in his past now)
and Sam Kinison to self-destructive excesses that sometimes also lash
out and harm others. Sad to say, we may be able to add Craig Charles to
this list.
That's all for the moment. I just thought I'd vent some of my grey
matter, perhaps clinging futilely to some semblence of topicality, and
try to put things in perspective. You can obviously never tell someone
by the character they play, but it's still very sad that - again, if the
news is accurate - something inside Craig Charles had to express itself
in this manner.
@2 Although there's a twinge of sadness in watching the old tapes now,
I'm still a loyal Red Dwarf fan, and hope that no one here will give
that up. 8-)
